The Center for Sustainable Communities is a Georgia based nonprofit with a focus of making communities greener, cleaner, healthier and safer. This nonprofit grew out of a faith based environmental ministry and is now one of the leading nonprofits of its kind in the metro Atlanta region. The Center for Sustainable Communities has a number of programming areas that are designed to take communities to the next level in areas such as education, sustainability, transportation, green spaces, built environment, climate and weather resilience, smart growth and planning, economic development and revitalization. The Center for Sustainable Communities delivers on these important sectors through research, technical assistance, evaluation, assessment, survey, specialized projects and programming, analysis and engineering.
The Center for Sustainable Communities prides its self on being “innovative and cutting edge”; examples include the establishment of the Advance Atmospheric Research and Monitoring Station design to monitor and decrease air pollution; and its Urban Agriculture Research Center design to conduct research on urban waters, urban agriculture and urban forest. The Center for Sustainable Communities regularly positions itself on important policy matters related to education, transportation and energy through direct advocacy and policy development. Successful recent examples include the establishment of the Clean Power Plan and GA Environmental Justice Coalitions.
The Center for Sustainable Communities helps neighborhoods become well in a holistic manner through efforts such the ECO-Districts; transforming entire communities in a vibrant and sustainable manner. The Center for Sustainable Communities – SMART Academy Center of Excellence was recognized state wide as a leading STEM Education initiative; with programming such as The Science of Film Making and STEM Through Athletics linking professional athletes with youth, the SMART Academy helps to strengthen communities by building stronger and more robust educational systems for at risk youth who dream of being tomorrows scientist and engineers. The Center for Sustainable Communities also works closely to make communities safer and more resilient to the effects of extreme weather through efforts such as NOAA’s Weather Ready Nation; saving lives and minimizing the impacts to our communities and economy.
